Language and identity – young people need to see the value and benefits of learning languages to engage. This means that the rationale for language learning needs to be meaningful and relevant to the learner.
    • Communication needs to be taught within the context of a community. This means that the purpose of the communication within and between communities needs to be made explicit to set out the links between language, identity, citizenship and values.
    • Language learning can be used to promote a sense of identity and making multiple ethnic and cultural identities acceptable.
    • Learning additional languages offers students new ways to understand their own identity and culture, and the cultural perspectives of others.
