How languages are learned and developed depends on a number of factors which influence both the learning process and outcomes for learners.

Languages can be learned in a variety of different contexts, as a home or community language or through language learning activities in an educational context. The skills and knowledge acquired in one context can be applied to the other languages.

  • Language pathways
As young people move through the various stages of the education system, they continue to develop their linguistic repertoire. The 1 + 2 Language Policy creates an entitlement for every child to start learning an additional language in the education system from P1 onwards, with the L3 introduced no later than P5.
