Literacies in other languages

Awareness of literacy in one language can assist the acquisition of literacy in another language and support language awareness and acquisition.

• Literacy awareness in the L1 can support the acquisition of literacy skills in other languages, but especially where the languages share a common writing system.
• Learning an additional language, even where there is only limited exposure, can support word awareness and reading acquisition.
• There is a complex and cyclical relationship between L1 literacy skills, self-efficacy and attainment in the L2.
• Developing literacy in L1 and L2 has a positive impact on the acquisition of a third language.
