Policy and practice

  • The Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act of 2005 aims to secure the status of the Gaelic language as a national language Scotland commanding equal respect to the English language.
  • Ongoing language shift and low levels of intergenerational transmission meant that the education system, and in particular Gaelic Medium Education, has been identified as the best way of achieving a sustainable future for the Gaelic language.
  • Gaelic Medium Education has been identified in the National Plan for Gaelic 2018 – 2023 as one of the ways of increasing the number of individuals who can speak, understand, read and write Gaelic and use the language with confidence.
  • Education Scotland have developed National Advice on Gaelic Education to be used in conjunction with CfE guidance.
