The study of additional languages in Australian schools face similar challenges as other Anglophone countries as a result of the “English is enough” ideology. Learning an additional language benefits both individuals and communities.
Languages offer learners unique insights and perspectives as well as developing skills. Language teaching is most successful when language learning is valued, and delivered by highly skilled teachers. Language teaching need to make explicit links with curriculum learning and develop metalinguistic understandings through explicit links with the L1.
