The Class of Miss Kiet

Children who do not speak the language of the school face many challenges; social, cultural and linguistic. Children might respond differently to these challenges and teachers need to respond to the children’s needs in a sensitive and holistic manner.
This observational film follows a class with children in the Netherlands who have come from refugee backgrounds and have varying levels of Dutch proficiency. This class aims to prepare children for further integration into the Dutch education system. This film highlights the challenges and frustrations experienced by children who do not speak the language of the education system and can not use their mother tongue to communicate with the teaching professionals.
